The Reason the DNC Refuses to Release its Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: A Deep Dive.

The move from the DNC to suppress the publication of its own post-election analysis on the last presidential race seems stunning yet not surprising. Resistant to frank assessments, the party's leadership apparatus often functions closer to a publicity machine than an electoral entity devoted to cultivating local power to secure victories.

A Culture Resistant to Internal Critique

Hesitant to break with the party establishment's culture of conformity, the DNC has remained within that legacy throughout this past year. Releasing an official autopsy might have shown that party leaders actually want to encourage open debate about the strategic failures that paved the way for the former president to win re-election. However, the DNC is proceeding as if there is little to understand from the electoral catastrophe from the last cycle.

Our guiding principle: will this lead to victory? If not, it’s a distraction from our fundamental goal," a rationale which was presented for withholding the document.

Critical Problems an Autopsy Would Have Examined

An autopsy report with any value would tackle head-on key points of failure. Among them are:

  • Electoral Disenchantment: The loss among a significant portion of the electorate who supported the Democratic ticket in 2020 became a critical factor during the tight recent race.
  • The Decision to Run: The stubborn decision by a party leader to stay in the race, coupled with a last-minute withdrawal, is viewed as robbing the party's base of open primaries.
  • Failing Everyday Americans: While facing inflation, the campaign is criticized for bowing to corporate donors' interests without successfully attempting to challenge the role of corporate greed.
  • The Foreign Policy Effect: The refusal to shift a stance concerning the situation in Gaza reportedly led to alienating significant blocs, especially with youth voters, Arab-Americans, Muslim voters.
  • Losing Young Voter Backing: Research shows a major decline of Democratic support among voters aged 18-29.

A History of Evasion

Choosing secrecy fits a pattern of sidestepping hard truths. This mirrors a situation where the vast majority of Democratic officeholder in Washington acquiesced to a sitting president's decision for running for re-election right up until a disastrous campaign event forced a change.

At the same time, large majorities of the electorate had been consistently telling surveyors that they opposed that candidate to seek re-election.

Campaign Spending Concerns

A substantive report would also probe matters about where money went, such as what sums were directed to party strategists as well as media firms over the course of a campaign which expended an enormous sum over a few months.

A Underlying Problem

Ultimately, the suppression of the official autopsy points to a submission to the existing power structure who engineered an unsuccessful electoral effort. The message to ordinary supporters – which includes millions of small donors – appears to be that they do not be trusted to see the lessons the leadership claim to have learned based on an analysis compiled from extensive interviews.

A party unwilling to honestly assess its own failings will struggle to escape the rut that proved so beneficial to the winning candidate.
